At Island Children‘s School, our focus is the development of a child‘s whole being: their social-emotional, cognitive and physical self. We provide quality early childhood education, support families, and connect our small community to the larger community with information and resources so that we may make a positive impact on the lives of children and their families.

Island Children‘s School‘s curriculum is based on ample free and imaginative play where children, within carefully planned environments and richly constructed activities, are able to explore and make choices enhancing themselves and their relationship with others and the world.

Private preschool offering quality programs to Island children.

Their preschool aged children, 2.9 – 5 years, come from the community of Martha‘s Vineyard, including all 6 towns. They serve up to 15 children per day from 8:30 – 2:30 p.m. The day includes morning circle time, activities, snack, outdoor adventure, lunch (brought from home), rest/afternoon activities, and dismissal. In keeping with the Waldorf Nursery groupings, they provide for children in a mixed age setting. They believe that all children benefit from being in natural family groupings that include a variety of ages and abilities.

Located on the beautiful island of Martha‘s Vineyard, VMS was founded in 1975 by a group of dedicated, determined parents who embraced the principles and educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. After being housed at several locations, the School purchased its present facility at 286 Main Street and Tashmoo Avenue in Vineyard Haven. In 1995 the School added to its Primary program for children ages 2.9 through 6 an Elementary class serving children ages 6 to 9 years old. Currently this elementary classroom is the only private elementary option for parents on the Island.
