Filmmakers Liz Witham and Ken Wentworth of Film-Truth Productions will launch “Keepers of the Light — The Gay Head Lighthouse Documentary and Historical Exhibit” this Saturday, August 6, from 10 am to 4 pm, with an opening celebration on National Lighthouse Day, Sunday, August 7, from 6 to 9 pm. This year’s National Lighthouse Day marks a year since the Gay Head Light was relighted at its new location. Sunday’s celebration will include a lighthouse-themed musical performance by Kate Taylor, Liv Taylor, and special guests, in addition to scenes from the forthcoming documentary and a discussion with the filmmakers.
The exhibit, housed in the historic Manning Building in front of the Gay Head Lighthouse, documents the lighthouse’s move through time lapses, architectural renderings, videos, and archival images.
The “Keepers of the Light” film is a feature-length documentary which tells the story of the historic lighthouse and the recent efforts of the Island community coming together to save the light from the cliff’s rapidly eroding edge. The lighthouse is a portal through which viewers learn about a small community, the birth of a nation, shipwrecks, and heroic rescues. From whale oil to electrification, this film tells the story of our region’s cultural and maritime history woven into the fabric of this remote Island icon.
“Keepers of the Light” is planned for broadcast in the fall of 2016. The Aquinnah exhibit is offered free to the public by Film-Truth Productions as an extension of their outreach and fundraising campaign for completion of the documentary film.
