One of the best days I ever had on the Vineyard was when I joined the parents of my son’s Chilmark School class after the last day of school and we all tailgated at Menemsha Beach. It was a beautiful summer day and we ate pizza and watched our children jump in the waves, collect sea-glass, and scoop up starfish with their nets by the jetty. We all walked along the pier beside boats full of people who had just arrived and docked in their slips, all smiling and playing music and excited to begin their vacations. Smells from cookouts mingled with salt-spray and the fragrant blooms of wild roses, and at dusk the fireflies twinkled in the sunset over Aquinnah. I couldn’t have been with a nicer group of parents — a joy to be part of this seaside community!
